Becoming New

Devotional by Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe

Warren W. Wiersbe has been one of my very favorite Bible teachers for most of my life. I don’t even remember when I first encountered his books, but they always gave me a clear explanation and some extra insight into any passage of Scripture I read or studied.

Cedarville University

While attending Cedarville University (CU), I enjoyed the privilege of hearing him speak! He would visit our college and speak in chapel which was a blessing to all of us. In 1987, Cedarville University awarded Warren Wiersbe an honorary Doctor of Letters at the school’s Centennial Celebration. My husband Tom and I graduated together in the Centennial Class and enjoyed the presentation during our graduation.

Wiersbe Reading Library

Warren and Betty Wiersbe donated his incredible personal library of 13,000 to 14,000 volumes to Cedarville University. The collection is housed in Cedarville’s Center for Biblical and Theological Studies for the benefit of students and faculty not for lending but for reading and research.

Wiersbe’s Legacy Continues

Dan Jacobsen is Warren Wiersbe’s grandson. He is also the Leadership and Teaching Pastor of Heartland Community Church in Olathe, Kansas. After the deaths of Warren and Betty Wiersbe, Dan and his uncle were going through Dr. Wiersbe’s expansive notebooks, they found a file of devotionals. Dan explained in an interview with podcaster Bill Holdridge of Poimen Ministries that his uncle did not have the time or inclination to do something with this collection that was clearly intended to be put into a devotional, so Dan stepped up. He needed to organize and edit the works in the way in which his grandfather would and add approximately twenty devotionals to round out the one hundred projected for the book.

At the heart of Becoming New is the fact that we have to transform ourselves and refocus on God for Jesus to shine through our lives, using the gifts God gave us. For me Day 67 was fantastic at pointing out the key points that Christians like me need to remember daily: That we are to be obedient…that we need to refocus our attention on Christ and be in God’s word daily. Spiritual experiences transform our character to make us more like Christ. The powerful truths that this book points out in clear, easy to understand language is what makes the book so relevant to today’s follower of Christ.

Becoming New ~ 100 Day Journey of Transformation through God’s Word

Every week I teach Ladies’ Bible Studies at Compassion Christian Church, the Effingham Campus, in Rincon, Georgia. Throughout the year I use prescribed studies to which I add insight from God as He leads me, but in the summer we do something different. I choose a daily devotional for all of us to walk through together. As soon as I saw Dan Jacobsen interviewed in Cedarville’s Chapel service online, I knew Becoming New was to be the devotional for my ladies for the summer of 2025.

Warren Weirsbe’s Becoming New devotional is not your average daily devotional. It is not a quick read. It has much more depth than I expected. Every sentence can be read at least five times to truly understand all that it offers for your reflection. As the devotions progress through the Old and New Testaments, doctrine is explained in a way that can transform you daily. The main Scripture given at the beginning of each reading is key and other Scriptural references throughout the devotion help you dive deeply into the Word. Don’t quit! Keep studying every day of this devotional!

The Becoming New Experience

Every week I meet my ladies, some on Tuesday evenings, some on Friday mornings, and I pray that God will give me a lesson that will be used by Him in their lives. During the summer daily devotional, I choose a topic based upon the recent days’ Scripture passages and devotional readings. This year my lessons have focused on JESUS: Fully God and Fully Man; What is the Kingdom of God?; Turning Suffering into Glory; The Power and Wisdom of The Cross, and so many others. My sessions have never been characterized as light and fluffy, but this summer has been thick with theology and loaded with learning!

“I love that the book follows the sequence of the Bible. It’s a nice overall review with new insights to accompany the Scripture from Wiersbe and Jacobsen,” Jennifer Peavy.

Each day’s reading in Becoming New is packed with Scripture and eternal truths that are clearly applied to our lives in 2025. If you are seeking a devotional that will take you to the Throne of Grace and show you the Heart of God, this is the one. Thank you, Dr. Wiersbe for continuing to teach and bless us even after your entrance into Glory!
